I want to be friends with Barbara…

I think we’d get along really well, both New Yorkers, both women, moms and business owners.

I’m fascinated at her background, growing up in a family of ten children that dealt with financial struggles and how she went on to become a millionaire investor and real estate mogul.

I’d love to chat with her about the 22 jobs she had before she decided to open a real estate office at the young age of 23 and how she grew it to a $6 billion dollar business. Even more impressive is that she started that business with only a $1,000 loan.

I want to pick her brain about leading a team, creating an empire, speaking at huge events, writing successful books, investing in new ideas, being a television personality and of course, her amazing style.

So who is this friend I’d love to have?

I’m talking about Barbara Corcoran.

She is a woman I was super excited to talk about in this summer series of women leaders. You know her from Shark Tank, and I encourage you to look up more information about this dynamic woman.

If you have Twitter, follow her. Her tweets are so often motivational and powerful messages. One of my favorite quotes comes from this lady…

“Don’t you dare underestimate the power of your own instinct.” – Barbara Corcoran

This is a great message to remember whether you are a company of one or a company of thousands. Listen to your gut.

Barbara wasn’t handed success, she earned it. And a big part of that is because she listened to her own instinct time and time again. She has been quoted in articles saying that she knew she didn’t want to work for anybody else, so becoming an entrepreneur was the answer.

I think it’s safe to say she made the right career choice.

Whether you work in your home office alone or lead a large corporate team, remember why you started doing what you are doing. And listen to yourself when you need to make the next big decision. If you want someone to talk to, I’m here. Schedule a call.

She is amazing and you need to watch this today…

For the summer months, I’m doing a series of newsletters focusing on women leaders of past and present that I truly admire.

Sheryl Sandberg is my focus for this week and the timing is perfect, as she’s been in the news lately as someone rumored to have been on the wish list to become the new CEO of Uber Technologies Inc. Sources say she will be staying put at Facebook, where she has been the COO for the past nine years. She’s been on many companies wish list to become their CEO because she is truly dynamic and amazing.

In a recent Bloomberg article I was reading, it was noted that at Facebook she has helped create a $445 billion company and has “become a leading voice on what companies need to do to boost diversity and improve their culture.”

Her resume is nothing short of amazing:

  • Harvard graduate
  • Former chief of staff for the United States Treasury Department under President Clinton
  • Former vice president of global online sales and operations at Google
  • Current COO of Facebook
  • Founder of Leanin.org (Lean In Foundation) which is a non-profit helping women to reach their goals
  • Founder of the Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to build a more equal and resilient world
  • Named in 2012 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world
  • Ranked as one of the 50 “Most Powerful Women in Business” by Fortune Magazine
  • First woman on the board at Facebook
  • Author of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead and co-author with Adam Grant of Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy
  • Speaker, her TED Talk from 2010 (see below) has over 7 million views

And so much more.

In 2015, Sandberg’s husband, Dave Goldberg, died suddenly and she has speaks openly about the pain of her loss and her life after this tragic event. The couple have two children together.

She spoke about her husband’s death, as well as building resiliency, practicing gratitude, celebrating always, focusing on the moments of joy and so much more in her commencement address for the University of California Berkeley’s Class of 2016 and I encourage you to watch her speech right now.

It’s extremely powerful and an excellent reminder to be grateful for everything in our lives.

War Paint and the amazing women that changed the world of beauty

I love the theatre. I’m sure my passion for dance and performance plays into that and I recently saw the amazing show, War Paint.

The show tells the story of two beauty industry icons and rivals, Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden.

Both women founded cosmetic companies in the early 1900s and found massive success on their journeys.

Women leaders today can take a look at these dynamic women and gain inspiration and confidence that they can do whatever they dream.

Rubinstein was the oldest in a family of eight girls and made her way to Australia from Poland in her early 20s. She began working on a beauty cream formula, after her own mother had given her some to take on her trip, and by 1902 she was opening her first salon. She figured out that different skin types required different products and that was a huge discovery for that era.

Next it was on to Paris, where a few of her sisters worked with her and they were supporting their family back in Poland. Make-up was developed there and soon she found herself opening a salon in New York City, where her name and brand became very well-known. Her husband even wrote advertisements for her. Her business survived through The Wall Street Crash and two World Wars. She was a pioneer, always a step ahead in the world of beauty. She wasn’t afraid of trying innovative ideas like creating hormone creams or beauty products for men. She loved the industry and she made it her life’s work.

The youngest of five children, Florence Nightingale Graham, (later Elizabeth Arden) was born in Canada to a family that struggled financially. She eventually moved to New York and worked with her brother in the pharmaceutical industry. This is where she learned about skincare.

She opened The Red Door Salon in 1910 in New York City and would ultimately open salons internationally, in places like Paris, Rome and Hong Kong. She helped women see that make-up was not for the lower class (a thought at the times) that it was beautiful and ladylike, if applied correctly. The “makeover” was a concept started in her salons. Her business survived the Great Depression and at the top of her career, she was one of the wealthiest women in the world.

I encourage you to read more about both of these women.

The takeaway is simple. They had dreams, they had ideas, they had information to share and at the time, it wasn’t always information people were ready to hear. They were so ahead of their time and many of the beauty techniques we enjoy today, came from the research and creativity of these powerhouses.

If your idea seems outlandish right now, think about these women.
If you don’t think you can do it, think about these women.
If you’re scared, think about these women.

They were able to build empires at a time when women leaders were scarce. We live in a different time. This is our time.

Embrace your power as a woman and lead. Make decisions. Try new things. Fail. Get back up. Try again. Someone might be writing a newsletter about you and your company in 50 years.

This tip is sweeter than chocolate

Happy Valentine’s Day! Sending my love and support to you and instead of a box of chocolates, I’d like to send a tip that will make your entire year sweeter.

Identify your number ONE source of income.

Think about it, right now. Write it down.

This is the part of your business making you the most money, the quickest.

You have various streams of income. You sell programs and services, you participate in speaking gigs or conferences, you receive money from book sales, etc.

Once you’ve identified number one, I want you do some work in that area. Focus on what actions you can take daily to increase that income further.

Example. If you run a sales program every March and it makes you the most money all year, break down the process and analyze why.

Are you targeting a more ideal client?
Is the program length the same, shorter or longer than your other programs?
Is the copy and message really on point?
Do you use affiliates in promotion?
Is the time of year making a difference?

Also, analyze the numbers around that program.

Are you spending the most money in advertising for this program?
Do you get a great ROI from social media ads?
Are the payment options different than what you offer elsewhere?
Is this the best breakdown of time spent versus income made?

With all the facts in place, you can form action plans to increase revenue. Maybe this program can run twice a year. Maybe you can increase the cost of this program, due to its popularity. Maybe you can collect new testimonials and create an even better sales page.

Identify your number ONE source of income. Do the work. Make more money.

Scared to be alone with them?

Welcome to the month of love! My life is full of things I love. My husband, my children, my family, my friends, my clients and colleagues.

And of course, my business. And along with that, the numbers in my business. When you give more love, you receive more love. And taking the time to get along with my numbers opens up the opportunity for a lot more of it to come my way. I invite you to try it.

If you aren’t in love with your numbers yet, if you’re still a little scared to be alone with them, try these icebreakers to get started on a path to love:

1) Simply, write down on a piece of paper, a financial goal at the beginning of the month. Let’s say it’s $3,000. Support that goal with your actions. Anytime you make money, write down the amount on that sheet and celebrate your way to the goal. Money becomes fun this way.

2) Look at your overhead, bills, invoices, upcoming events. Knowing your numbers is empowering and gives you the knowledge to make decisions for growth. If you have a huge tax bill due on your house in a certain month, it might not be the best time to plan a pleasure trip or invest in a new training. If three months out of the year, you don’t pay car insurance, use the extra money to invest in your business by attending a conference you know will net a great ROI or put more money into advertising. When you truly know and understand your finances, they become easier to manage.

It’s Your Responsibility

Some things are best left to the experts…

A gourmet meal prepared by an experienced chef.

A fashion shoot styled by a professional stylist.

A living room designed by an interior decorator.

If you aren’t a chef there isn’t much worry if you never learn how to cook. Same with the other scenarios. These are specific jobs, talents and skills.

The one area you MUST understand, the one thing you NEED to know, the one responsibility you better take on, no matter what kind of business you run is your NUMBERS.

I talk a lot about money. You’ve heard me say, “It’s only money.” It’s a tool, an energy source, to get you to that ultimate desire or goal. It’s what you need to make it happen. And if you aren’t immersed in those numbers every week, you are in very, big trouble.

Every Monday is money Monday for me. I come into the office early to look at finances. And yes, I do have experts around me (accountants, etc) that help me understand and analyze, but I have made it a point to know everything that is happening in my business with respect to finances. And you should, too. I learned early on from my father to take out a piece of paper and run the numbers. Whether my business was small or whether it was well over a million dollars in sales annually, I could, and I do, take out one piece of paper and run my numbers. I understand where my business is financially.  

I’ve spoken to many women business owners who don’t handle their own money. They let their husbands, partners, professionals handle it. Because for some reason men and money seems like the right thing. I’ve heard excuses like, “he’s better at math,” or “he handles our household finances, so I figured it made sense.” There is of course also, “my bookkeeper or accountant handles it, I will check with them.”

Or, they pass it off to a VA or other support team member to handle and before they know it, they have distanced themselves from one of the major components of their business.

Listen, there is no problem asking for help. You should. But you need to be as involved in your financial processes as possible. Know your pricing, your expenses, know what you pay your team, know who owes money and who is paid in full.

If I’m on a call with someone, and they mention they are sorry they are late on this month’s payment and how much do they owe again, and I have no clue, how does that make me look? Like a very disinterested and out-of-touch owner.

You don’t need to be the one at the bank or online paying the bills, but you better know exactly what is happening with the people who are. It’s your responsibility.

We can’t accept this any longer

Women. We’ve been in the news and on the news a lot lately. There’s so much going on in the world and no matter your political views, one thing is certain…we all should be treated equally in the workplace.

Think about your own life.

Have you accepted a position at a lower pay grade than you expected because you feared confrontation?

Have you taken on a client at a lesser rate because you didn’t want to negotiate?

Have you decreased your prices because you weren’t confident in your value and worth?

We earn less and we accept it. And that has to stop. It has been said that women entrepreneurs even pay themselves less than male entrepreneurs. It is time to step up and charge our value, pay ourselves our worth and negotiate jobs at what we deserve.

Confidence is usually the factor holding us back. We have a little voice inside of us that tells us not to be dramatic or not to take things too personally. We need to tune that voice out and instead start using our real voice and be heard.

As women, we are natural nurturers, which sometimes leads to us giving more than expected and not stepping up and asking for what we are worth.

We own our responsibilities.

Our work ethic is strong.

Our dedication to what we do is fierce.

We control our own destiny.

As we stand up individually, we will be standing up together. Understand and ask for your value. You are worth it.

Can we stop doing this?

When I was very young, I had that typical girl mentality…

I don’t like her because:

~She’s prettier than me.

~She’s a better dancer.

~The guy I like likes her more.

~She’s smarter than me.

It wasn’t until I was a little older that I realized the power we have as women when we are supportive of one another.

I don’t know why everything has to be a competition between women. We all have special skills and attributes that no one else can match and we need to stop breaking each other down, and instead start lifting each other up.

I work primarily with women and a few special men in my coaching business and I could not be prouder when they come to me with fantastic news. I genuinely want to see them excel. I want to help them reach their wildest dreams. I want them to make a great income and live an even greater life.

When we support each other, we are truly unstoppable. You’ve heard the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child.” And isn’t that the truth? I loved when my kids were in school and I was attending parent meetings and we were planning events and leaning on one another to take on projects or just chit chatting about the crazy journey of parenthood. We needed each other to get through some of those long and busy days.

I think it takes a village to run and grow a business, too. We need each other. If we stopped the competition, the pettiness, the need to be the best and instead focused on friendship, support and love, this world would be one fantastic place.

There will always be someone prettier, smarter, faster, more creative, but they won’t be YOU. You have all you need and if you partner up with the ladies who have different skills than you and you put those skills to work together, you are going to grow and thrive and be super successful.

I have been fortunate to have mentors, coaches, and friends support me in this journey in building Slater Success Coaching and they have made the difference in my success. In helping me see what is at times right in front of me, yet invisible to my eyes and support me in taking actions that are out of my comfort zone. They stand for me, and with me, in good times and in the more difficult times.

You are going to change the world

A fantastic movie does something to our souls. It can make us feel joy, hope, happiness, sadness. I recently saw, Hidden Figures, based off the real-life story of African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson and her two colleagues, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. I am not going to give the movie away, so it is ok to keep reading.

These amazing women worked with NASA to provide math calculations needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions.

I was blown away. The power and the impact these women had decades ago, in a time of segregation and a time when women in business, and leadership roles, wasn’t as common as it is today.

If these women could break through the many obstacles and challenges before them in the 1960s, what can we be doing as women in business in 2017? The opportunities we have before us are great.

No matter what industry you are in, you are making a difference and you are doing work that is needed. Keep going! I am behind you and there are millions of women entrepreneurs and business leaders on your side, too.

Just as these women’s calculations changed the course of history, our work changes the world, too.

Every time a client tells me, “They have grown their sales” or “They have stepped into their leadership and are leading a team” or “They have reached or surpassed their goals” or “They no longer have any more debt,” I know their lives are changed forever. And it makes me proud and honored to be a coach and do what I do.

You have changed plenty of lives. I’ve shared with you in the past, that’s it’s important to ask for testimonials and read them out loud to yourself, often. You are helping people to grow their businesses, save money, make money, look and feel beautiful, learn about nutrition, live with less stress – no matter what it might be.

 

You are making an impact in this world. You are a strong leader and in 2017, reflect on that positive power.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing everyday that scares you.”

Who is the Boss in 2017?

2017 is here. It’s not coming. It’s not happening soon. It’s here. Be a boss, CEO, manager, director and leader this year. Take control. Get stuff done. Make money. Live your life. No excuses.

I’m changing things up and I’m starting newsletter number one of the new year off on a different note. I’m always here to inspire and motivate you. But I’m also here to push you. To make you uncomfortable and squirm a bit in your seat. When that happens, great things follow.

I want you to embrace leadership this year. You run a business. You’re a boss. Act that way. Even if you are a business of one, you need to step into the role you created for yourself. You are in charge. You determine what this year looks like for you.

Is it the year you crush your revenue goals? Or another year you make ‘just’ enough?

Is it the year you raise your prices to finally ask for what you’re worth? Or another year of being afraid of asking for your value?

Is it the year you hire a team, delegate tasks and focus on business development and sales? Or another year you continue to do it all yourself and stunt your own growth?

Be a boss, the CEO, the head honcho. I’m working on changes and developments in my business that scare the hell out of me. I’ll share everything with you in due time, but for now, know this. You can do it. You can do whatever you want. You can make this year different. You are never stuck. You always have a choice.

Be a boss. Start planning for a 2017 that blows you away. I worked on the boring end of year stuff last week. Filing, cleaning my desk, deleting emails. Then I took Thursday-yesterday off to spend time with my kids and my husband.

I rang in the new year with revolving guests in my home, averaging at 13, and then concluded the weekend with hosting a Rose Bowl party and supporting USC, Go Trojans!

USC won the game in the last 5 seconds, it is an article unto itself. They started off strong, took the lead and took control of the game. Then in the second half they were falling behind, the team stayed in the game, fighting for what was important to them… a win, led by a freshman quarterback, YES a young man still in his teens brought home the win in the last 5 seconds. What a game!
